Why Oklahoma allergies are their own beast
Stillwater and the surrounding Payne, Noble, and Logan County service areas sit in a corner of the country that manages to have four allergy seasons instead of the usual two. Eastern red cedar releases pollen in January and February. Oak, maple, and elm peak in March–April. Bermuda and Johnson grass push through May–July. Ragweed dominates August–October. Between the four cycles, mold spore counts stay elevated year-round because of the humid transitional weeks in April–May and September–October. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has ranked the Oklahoma City metro (which includes greater Stillwater's climate profile) in the top-25 "allergy capitals" every year for the past decade.
That's the outside air. Your job — and ours, as your HVAC partner in Stillwater, Perkins, Cushing, and the rest of our service map — is to make the inside air something you can actually breathe. There is a clear priority order for that, and most homeowners spend their money out of order.
The priority stack (spend in this order)
Priority 1: Filtration done right
The single biggest lever is filtration, and it's also the single easiest one to get wrong. A properly-installed high-MERV filter in a matched filter cabinet removes the pollen, mold spores, and fine dust that drive most allergy symptoms. A high-MERV filter dropped into a slot that wasn't designed for it starves your blower, freezes your coil, and cuts your equipment's life short. The difference between "MERV 13 with a proper 4-inch media cabinet" and "MERV 13 crammed into a 1-inch stock slot" is enormous — and homeowners often don't know they're doing the second thing until we show up on a service call.
Practical framing:
- Normal household, no allergy sufferers → MERV 8, 60–90 day replacement schedule.
- Household with mild seasonal allergies or pets → MERV 11, 60 day replacement schedule.
- Household with asthma, autoimmune concerns, or heavy allergy load → MERV 13 in a 4- or 5-inch media cabinet, 6–12 month replacement.

Priority 2: Humidity control
Indoor relative humidity below 35% dries out the mucous membranes that filter pollen out of your nose before it hits your lungs — allergy symptoms feel worse in dry indoor air even when the pollen count outside is the same. Above 55%, dust mites and mold thrive; both are stronger allergy triggers for many households than the pollen coming through the door. The target is 40–50% relative humidity year-round.
In an Oklahoma summer, a properly-sized AC pulls humidity out of the air naturally as it cools — that's the whole reason a cold surface (the evaporator coil) makes water drip into the drain pan. An oversized AC cools too fast, shuts off, and never pulls enough humidity out — this is one of the sneaky reasons a Manual J load calc matters for IAQ and not just efficiency. A well-sized system with a healthy coil and a clear condensate drain handles most Oklahoma summer humidity work automatically.
In winter, an Oklahoma home can dry out to 20–25% indoor humidity if the HVAC is running heavily. That's when a whole-house humidifier — tied into the return duct with a humidistat — earns its keep for allergy households. It's a modest install (usually a half day) and it stops the winter allergy-and-nosebleed cycle before it starts.
Priority 3: Source control (what's already in the house)
Filtration and humidity keep the outside air clean. Source control is about what's already inside:
- Coil and drain hygiene. A biofilm-covered evaporator coil is a mold farm sitting directly in your air stream. We include a coil inspection and drain flush on every Sitton Comfort Plan tune-up. If your last tune-up was more than 12 months ago, this is a fast win.
- Return-air location. A single central return that sits under a bedroom hallway pulls air (and dust) unevenly across the house. Additional return-air paths — even trimming the bottom of a bedroom door for airflow — helps.
- Vacuuming with a real HEPA vacuum. Regular bag vacuums push fine dust straight through the exhaust and back into the air. A sealed HEPA vacuum captures it.
- Doormat + shoes-off + regular bedding wash. Sub-HVAC advice, but every allergist we've heard from puts these three in the top-five list.
Priority 4: Dedicated purification stages
Once filtration, humidity, and source control are in a good place, targeted purification stages are the last mile:
- UV-C on the coil — kills mold and biofilm on the wet evaporator surface. Best-in-class ROI for humid Oklahoma summers. Does not remove pollen.
- Bipolar ionization / PCO — some real evidence for VOC and odor reduction, less for particulate. Buy from proven brands with third-party testing (skip anything that leans hard on marketing language).
- Room-level HEPA purifier in the primary bedroom — the highest per-dollar IAQ move for a household with an active allergy sufferer. Buy on CADR, not marketing MERV numbers.

Where homeowners misspend the IAQ budget
- Buying an air purifier for the living room when the bedroom is where you spend 8 hours a night. Priority the bedroom first.
- Adding UV or ionization before upgrading the filter cabinet. Purification stages layered on top of a MERV 8 in a leaky 1-inch slot is spending premium dollars on the wrong bottleneck.
- Duct cleaning as a first step. Rarely justified. Only worth doing after visible mold, rodent evidence, or a construction event. Do it after filtration and humidity are handled, not before.
- Continuous fan on maximum in summer without checking coil condensation behavior. Running the blower on high continuously can re-evaporate moisture off a wet coil back into the house, undoing the AC's dehumidification work. A lower "circulate" setting on a good thermostat is almost always better.
Seasonal timing — when to do what
