What MERV actually measures
MERV — Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — is an ASHRAE 52.2 rating from 1 to 16 that tells you how well an air filter captures particles of different sizes. The rating comes from a standardized lab test that measures the filter's capture efficiency across three particle-size ranges (0.3–1.0 microns, 1.0–3.0 microns, and 3.0–10.0 microns). A higher MERV number means more particles trapped — but also more resistance to airflow, which is the tradeoff every homeowner needs to understand before they buy.
Here's the quick reference we use with customers across Stillwater and the surrounding Payne, Noble, and Logan County service areas:
| MERV 1–4 | Fiberglass panel filters. Traps lint and the biggest dust bunnies. Protects equipment only; does nothing for indoor air quality. |
| MERV 5–8 | Pleated disposable filters. Catches pollen, mold spores, larger dust. The default in most new-construction Stillwater homes. |
| MERV 9–12 | Better pleated filters. Adds finer dust, some pet dander, some smoke particles. Good middle ground for allergy sufferers. |
| MERV 13–14 | Media filters (usually 4" or 5" deep). Captures the majority of fine dust, most mold spores, and a meaningful share of smoke and virus-sized aerosols. The starting point for asthma / immunocompromised households. |
| MERV 15–16 | Rarely appropriate for residential ductwork. Extreme pressure drop; usually paired with commercial systems or dedicated HEPA bypass units. |
When each MERV rating is the right choice
MERV 8 — the "default that's often correct"
A MERV 8 pleated 1-inch filter is the standard install on most Stillwater HVAC systems. It captures pollen, dust, and larger allergens without meaningfully restricting airflow through a stock 1-inch filter slot. If nobody in the house has allergies and the system is under 10 years old, MERV 8 is usually the right answer — it protects the equipment (which is filtration's first job) without stressing the blower.
MERV 11 — the upgrade that fits without changes
MERV 11 catches finer particles than MERV 8 (smoke, some pet dander, mold spores) and generally still fits a 1-inch slot without causing airflow problems on modern ECM-driven blowers. If your household has mild seasonal allergies or you have pets, MERV 11 is a solid step up that doesn't usually require a duct or blower change. Change it more often than MERV 8 (every 60 days, not 90).
MERV 13 — the asthma-and-allergy target (with a caveat)
MERV 13 is the whole-house filtration target for households with asthma, autoimmune concerns, or heavy allergy loads. It captures the majority of particles in the 0.3–1.0 micron range including many bacteria, smoke particles, and virus-carrying aerosols. But you cannot just drop a 1-inch MERV 13 into a system spec'd for MERV 8 and walk away. The pressure drop is too high — you'll starve the blower, drop coil temperature, and often trigger a frozen evaporator coil or a short-cycling system. The right move is a 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet with a MERV 13 media filter, which gives the same MERV rating far more filter surface area and much less pressure drop.
MERV 14 and above — specialty only
MERV 14+ filters need engineered airflow to work in a residential system. A bypass HEPA setup (separate blower on a slower loop) is one path; a fully redesigned duct system with a matched high-static-pressure blower is another. If you have a specific medical requirement that calls for HEPA-grade filtration, we can design and install the right architecture — but MERV 14+ on a stock residential furnace is a failure mode waiting to happen.
Where homeowners get MERV wrong
Three failure patterns we see on service calls every summer:
- The "MERV Maximum" upgrade. A homeowner reads a Consumer Reports article, buys the highest MERV rating at Lowe's, drops it into the 1-inch slot, and calls us a month later because the system "isn't cooling." We find a frozen coil, a starved blower, and often a fried run capacitor. The filter box says "restores freshness to your home." What it actually did was cost them $600 in repairs.
- The "set it and forget it" filter. A high-MERV filter loads up with particles faster than a low-MERV one because it captures more. A MERV 11 or 13 in a 1-inch slot needs to be replaced every 30–60 days, not the "6 months" the box sometimes claims. A choked filter is worse than no filter — it bends inward under blower pressure and lets dust bypass through the gap.
- The wrong filter size. A filter that doesn't seal tight against the frame — nominal 20x25 but the slot is actually 20x25.5 — lets unfiltered air bypass the entire filter. The higher the MERV, the more air goes around instead of through. Measure your actual slot before you buy.

What Sitton actually does on a filtration upgrade
- Measure current static pressure with a digital manometer across the return, supply, and filter. Compare against the equipment's rated external static pressure (usually 0.5" w.c. for standard residential air handlers).
- Inspect the existing filter slot for sealing, size accuracy, and access. A good filter installed in a bad slot fails.
- Recommend the right MERV target for your household — allergies, pets, respiratory concerns, hobbies (woodworking, welding), and whether anyone smokes or uses gas cooking heavily.
- Spec and install a media cabinet if the MERV target exceeds what the current slot supports. 4-inch cabinets are the typical retrofit; 5-inch on larger systems.
- Re-measure static pressure with the new filter installed to confirm the blower is happy. Adjust blower speed if needed on ECM-equipped systems.
- Set the replacement schedule — printed on a magnet on the return grille so you can't miss it.

Filtration is one leg of a three-leg stool for indoor air quality. If MERV is on your radar, spend 10 minutes on the other two: humidity control and source reduction matter as much as filter density, especially during Oklahoma's spring and fall allergy peaks. And check that your condensate drain line isn't feeding biofilm right back into your air stream — a clogged drain grows mold that a good filter shouldn't have to deal with.
