Stillwater's older housing stock is a different comfort problem
Stillwater has a lot of housing stock built between 1920 and 1975 — craftsmans and bungalows near downtown, ranches from the 1950s and 60s in Cimarron Hills and the OSU-adjacent neighborhoods, and split-levels from the 1970s spread across the older residential streets. These homes were built either with radiators (no cooling ductwork at all), with early forced-air systems that got upgraded in the 1970s or 80s (undersized ductwork, poor return-air paths), or with additions and bonus rooms that were never properly served by the central system.
When one of those homes needs new cooling — either because the current system failed or because the family finally wants comfort in that upstairs bedroom that's always 8°F warmer than the rest of the house — the conventional "swap in a new central AC" answer often doesn't fit. Here's the honest comparison between adding to central ductwork and installing a ductless mini-split, framed for the actual Stillwater older-home problem.

When ductless is the clear answer for a Stillwater older home
1. The home has no ductwork at all
The 1920s craftsman with original radiators, the 1930s bungalow that was never updated with forced air, the 1940s farmhouse — these homes have no existing ductwork to hook a central AC into. Retrofitting central ductwork means building soffits, dropping ceilings, or losing closet space to chase runs. Ductless bypasses all of that: one outdoor unit, one or more indoor heads, one exterior wall penetration per head for the refrigerant line set. The install is minimally invasive and reversible.
2. The problem is one room, not the whole house
A bonus room over the garage that's always 10°F off. An addition tacked onto the back of the house that was never properly ducted. A finished attic bedroom the original ducts can't reach. Instead of tearing apart the whole duct system to fix one comfort dead zone, a single-zone ductless head serves that specific room independently — often for well under the cost of a full duct rework, and always with better delivered comfort than force-fitting the central system.
3. Family members have very different comfort preferences
Central AC serves the whole house at one setpoint (unless you add damper-based zoning, which has its own maintenance and comfort tradeoffs). Multi-zone ductless gives each occupied space its own thermostat. If Grandma keeps her bedroom at 74°F and the teenager wants their room at 68°F, ductless handles it without the temperature wars.
4. You want summer AND winter comfort with one system
Every modern ductless system is a heat pump — it heats and it cools. For a home without a central furnace, or for a homeowner already thinking about the heat-pump path, ductless combines the two decisions into one install. The cold-climate heat pump article covers the mechanics.
5. You want the flexibility to keep adding zones over time
A multi-zone outdoor unit can accept additional indoor heads later if you finish the basement, add an office in the garage, or convert the attic. You install what you need today and expand as your priorities shift. Central AC doesn't work that way — the equipment is sized to the plan at install time.
When central AC is still the better answer
- The existing ductwork is in good shape — Manual D verified, no significant leaks, correctly sized for the equipment. Replacing the outdoor condenser and indoor coil onto healthy existing ducts is usually the cheapest path to modern efficiency.
- The home has a full basement or attic that supports adding trunk-line ductwork cleanly. Retrofitting central ductwork in these homes is much less invasive than in a slab-on-grade home.
- The homeowner strongly prefers invisible indoor units. Even the least-visible ductless option (ceiling cassette) is still more visible than a supply register. If aesthetic invisibility is a hard requirement and central ductwork is feasible, central is right.
- The house needs whole-house dehumidification as a primary comfort concern. Central systems dehumidify better than ductless because they run longer cycles and pull more total condensate — a ductless head cooling one room efficiently produces less dehumidification of the rest of the house. A whole-house dehumidifier can be added to either system, but native dehumidification behavior is stronger on central.

- Refrigerant line-set planning — routing the copper line sets from outdoor to each indoor head with concealed runs where possible (interior wall cavities, attic space, exterior chases painted to match).

Where ductless installs go wrong (avoid these)
- Oversized heads. A ductless head oversized for its zone short-cycles, doesn't dehumidify, and wastes money. Manual J at the zone level is not optional.
- Ignored condensate management. Every indoor head produces condensate that has to be routed to a drain. Poorly-planned condensate lines drip on walls or freeze in exterior runs during winter. Sitton pipes every condensate to a code-appropriate drain with heat trace on exposed exterior runs.
- Line-set length outside manufacturer spec. Every Daikin outdoor unit has a maximum total line-set length across all heads. Exceeding it silently reduces capacity and can void warranty. Planning matters.
- Skipped nitrogen purge and evacuation. Cutting corners at commissioning shortens the compressor life and creates efficiency loss you can't recover. This is where the "Daikin authorized dealer" trained-install standard actually matters.
