Why the refrigerant changed (the short version)
Congress passed the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act (AIM Act) in December 2020. It gave the EPA authority to phase down the U.S. production of high-GWP (global warming potential) hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants over about 15 years. R-410A — the standard residential AC and heat-pump refrigerant since around 2010 — has a GWP of roughly 2,088. It was scheduled for a step-down starting in 2025, dropping U.S. production quotas by 40% in a series of increments through the early 2030s.
Manufacturers had to pick new refrigerants for new equipment built starting in 2025 (some late 2024). The two dominant choices for residential and light-commercial AC and heat pumps became:
- R-32 — a single-component refrigerant with GWP around 675. Daikin, Fujitsu, and several other Japanese and international manufacturers picked R-32.
- R-454B — a two-component blend (R-32 + R-1234yf) with GWP around 466. Carrier, Bryant, Lennox, Trane, and American Standard picked R-454B.
Both are much lower GWP than R-410A. Both carry an ASHRAE A2L classification (low toxicity, mildly flammable — see below). Both are viable long-term replacements. If you buy a new system in 2026, it ships with one or the other depending on the brand you choose.

Both refrigerants perform well in the residential and light-commercial size range. The efficiency difference at the system level is dominated by compressor design, coil design, and inverter behavior — not by the refrigerant choice itself. If you're comparing quotes between a Daikin (R-32) system and a Carrier or American Standard (R-454B) system, evaluate the equipment on its own merits — SEER2 rating, HSPF2 rating, warranty terms, dealer network — not on which refrigerant it uses.
The A2L "mildly flammable" question (what it does and doesn't mean)
Both R-32 and R-454B are classified A2L under ASHRAE Standard 34. Breaking that down:
- "A" = low toxicity. Both refrigerants have very low toxicity in normal operation and even in leak scenarios.
- "2L" = mildly flammable with a burning velocity capped at 10 cm/s. For context, propane (A3) burns at roughly 45 cm/s and gasoline vapor faster still.
What "mildly flammable" means in practice:
- The refrigerant will not ignite under any conditions inside a normally-operating sealed AC system. There's no ignition source and the concentration inside the refrigerant loop is above the upper flammability limit anyway.
- Under a large leak into a small enclosed space with an ignition source (open flame, spark), A2L refrigerants can ignite — but the burning behavior is closer to a slow deflagration than an explosion. Real-world residential leak scenarios do not produce dangerous conditions in any published test data.
- The safety changes are technician-facing: dedicated recovery tools that don't cross-contaminate refrigerants, updated brazing procedures with nitrogen purge, specific leak-detection procedures. Sitton trains every installing tech on A2L procedures.
- Newer indoor units for A2L systems include leak-sensor safeties that trigger the blower and shut off gas ignition sources if a leak is detected. This is a manufacturer-built-in safety layer.
You will not notice A2L operation compared to your old R-410A system in normal use. The system heats and cools identically. Nothing about how you operate it, program it, or interact with it changes.
What changes for homeowners
New installs (2026+)
- Your new system ships with R-32 or R-454B depending on the brand.
- The indoor coil and outdoor unit are a matched A2L set — you can't mix legacy R-410A components with new A2L components.
- Some indoor units include factory-installed leak sensors as an A2L safety layer.
- Install procedures on our side take slightly longer due to A2L handling — planning, ventilation, and evacuation steps. This is priced into the quote.
Existing R-410A systems
- Continue using them normally. Nothing changes about operation.
- Repairs remain available — R-410A refrigerant is still legal and available. Prices will trend up over the phasedown period as supply tightens.
- Sitton continues to carry R-410A and continues to service every legacy system in our customer base.
- When your R-410A system reaches end-of-life, the replacement will be a full new A2L system — outdoor unit + matched indoor coil. Retrofit isn't supported by any manufacturer.
Commercial refrigeration
- A parallel transition is underway on commercial refrigeration. Many commercial systems moved to R-448A / R-449A already; further steps toward lower-GWP refrigerants are ongoing.
- Existing walk-in coolers and reach-ins remain serviceable with their original refrigerant.

What changes for HVAC contractors (and why you should care)
The reason you should care about your contractor's readiness for A2L: A2L procedures are only "safe" when they're done right. Cutting corners on nitrogen purge during brazing, using non-A2L-rated recovery equipment, or shortcutting evacuation on an A2L system can compromise system reliability and, in extreme cases, safety. Ask any contractor you're considering:
- Are all installing technicians A2L-certified (usually documented via EPA 608 + manufacturer A2L training)?
- Are recovery machines, gauge sets, and vacuum pumps A2L-rated and dedicated (not shared with R-410A work without proper cleanout)?
- Are leak-detection procedures updated for A2L systems?
- What's the commissioning protocol — is superheat/subcooling verified on the running system before the tech leaves?
